NJ MasterChorale

About Us

The New Jersey MasterChorale is a symphonic chorus under the direction of Dr. William Gorton, and is comprised of 110 singers primarily from the greater South Jersey and Philadelphia areas, with some singers coming from as far as Allentown, PA and Easton, MD.  MasterChorale participation and performances are offered as part of the Music Ministry of the Haddonfield United Methodist Church. The MasterChorale had its beginnings in 1974 as the Haddonfield United Methodist Church Oratorio Choir.

This dedicated and enthusiastic group performs choral masterworks twice yearly and is accompanied by musicians of the Philadelphia Orchestra and Friends. Concert tickets are available free of charge and may be obtained by calling the HUMC office at 856-429-0403 approximately one month before scheduled performances.  Membership in the MasterChorale is by audition, which may be arranged ad hoc with Dr. Gorton by calling the church office.

Rehearsals are held once a week and provide for review of choral masterworks and other quality repertoire.  Past repertoire has included works such as Verdi’s Requiem, Brahms’ Requiem, Mozart’s Grand Mass in C Minor, Haydn’s Creation, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Vivaldi’s Gloria, Handel’s Messiah, Durufle’s Requiem, Rutter’s Gloria, among numerous others. In addition to its twice-yearly concerts, the group has performed with the Ocean City Pops, Symphony in C, was seen numerous times as part of the AVA Jubilate! concert series and has also enjoyed appearances at the Ocean City Tabernacle, the National Constitution Center and the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The Chorale’s spring 2018 concert was featured in a broadcast on WWFM, and an upcoming project will be a Christmas program by the Chorale produced for Public Radio International and made available to all public radio stations nationwide for broadcast in December, 2018.

We would love to have you join us! And we welcome your support. Contact Dr. Gorton to arrange an audition if you wish to participate in our inspiring concerts.

If you wish to make a contribution, you can send a check made out to HUMC Friends of Music Fund (this fund provides resources for music programs at the church, including the MasterChorale). See address below:
